WILLA HUT

Collage Self-Portraits

K - 2

Students began the project by looking at examples of David Hockney's artist self-portraits. They identified the different parts of the face and closely observed their own facial features in the mirror. They added defining features and details to their portraits using colored pencil. Students practiced cutting and gluing skills, and ripping and overlapping by collaging the background of their artwork with newspaper and tissue paper, which they imaginatively placed in the background. In sharing their artwork, they identified all the parts of the face, and the details they added to make their artwork look like them.
