View from a Window Collage

9th Grade

In this lesson, students learned about the history of collage and the collage process. They explored elements of art, color and space, by creating a collage of a view out a window.

To begin the project, students chose photos of places of personal significance. Students then chose a color palette and began creating and sourcing materials based on this palette. Materials students used included magazine paper, handmade paper, colored construction paper, and newspaper. They cut, arranged, and overlapped these materials to create a clear foreground, middle ground and background.

Students were challenged with representing objects and imagery in their reference photo using collage materials. In class, we referred to this process as creating ‘matches,’ or recreations of objects using new materials — a technique commonly used in collage.

Students participated in a gallery walk where they gave each other written 'glows and grows' on collage drafts.

I met one-on-one with students  during the collage process.

Students gave each other peer feedback on one change they could make to their collage based on comments received during the gallery walk.
